Candra Aditya’s Dewi pulang

Abstract Short films have proven an important medium for social commentary in contemporary Indonesia. As example of the genre, this special issue BKI presents Candra Aditya’s (2016) short film, Dewi pulang (Dewi goes home), which follows a young Javanese woman as she travels from Jakarta to her natal home Central Java attend father’s funeral. A critically annotated transcript and translation film’s dialogue is followed by four essays on various aspects film conversation with filmmaker. Issues addressed include changing nature ‘indie’ cinema post-authoritarian Indonesia; filmmaking practices specific ; interplay absence presence Dewi’s movement between Java; juxtaposition Indonesian-, English- Javanese-language dialogue, forms sociality they respectively embody. Taken whole, offers at once window onto Indonesia new primary materials further analysis.
